چکیده

Sharing simple ideas across a broad community of practitioners helps them to work together more effectively. For this reason, drought early warning systems spend considerable effort on describing how hazards are detected and defined. Well-articulated definitions provide shared basis for collaboration, response planning, impact mitigation. One very useful measure agricultural stress has been the “Water Requirement Satisfaction Index” (WRSI). In study, we develop new, simpler metric water requirement satisfaction, Phenological Water Balance (PWB). We describe metric, compare it WRSI yield statistics in food-insecure region (east Africa), show can be easily combined with analog-based rainfall forecasts produce end-of-season estimates growing season deficits. dry areas, PWB is similar WRSI. these regions, that coupling between deficits increased reference evapotranspiration amplifies impacts droughts. wet other hand, our new provides information about excess—seasons so they may not conducive good outcomes. Finally, present PWB-based forecast example, demonstrating framework used translate assumptions seasonal outcomes into predictions Effective humanitarian relief efforts rely projections design deploy appropriate targeted responses. At present, difficult combine gridded satellite-gauge precipitation climate forecasts. Our overcome obstacle. Future extensions could use contextualize supply indicators, like actual values derived from satellite observations or hydrologic models.

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water

abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...

An Intelligent System for Monitoring and Predicting Water Quality

In this paper we present an intelligent system for monitoring and predicting water quality, whose main aim is to help the authorities in the "decision-making" process in the battle against the pollution of the aquatic environment, which is very vital for the public health and the economy of Northern Greece. Two sensor-telematic networks for collecting water quality measurements in real time (An...

Phenological and water-use patterns underlying maximum growing season length at the highest elevations: implications under climate change.

Consequences of climate change on tree phenology are readily observable, but little is known about the variations in phenological sensitivity to drought between populations within a species. In this study, we compare the phenological sensitivity to temperature and water availability in Abies pinsapo Boiss., a drought-sensitive Mediterranean fir, across its altitudinal distribution gradient. Twi...

Integration of Ground and Multi-Resolution Satellite Data for Predicting the Water Balance of a Mediterranean Two-Layer Agro-Ecosystem

The estimation of site water budget is important in Mediterranean areas, where it represents a crucial factor affecting the quantity and quality of traditional crop production. This is particularly the case for spatially fragmented, multi-layer agricultural ecosystems such as olive groves, which are traditional cultivations of the Mediterranean basin. The current paper aims at demonstrating the...

Civil conflict sensitivity to growing-season drought.

To date, the research community has failed to reach a consensus on the nature and significance of the relationship between climate variability and armed conflict. We argue that progress has been hampered by insufficient attention paid to the context in which droughts and other climatic extremes may increase the risk of violent mobilization. Addressing this shortcoming, this study presents an ac...
